Dormancy

2023

Dormancy focuses on the contemporary British town beach, a place of tourism. It depicts structures, product of the tourism industry, but in an inactive and in-between state, at night and in the off season. Photography is not used to document what is, conveying the beaches identity as singular and fixed, but as an edit of place more questioning of its plurality.

The images are realistic depictions of false sights, as achieved through long exposures. What is meant by this is that, although taken at night, it is as if the subjects in the foreground are lit by day. The beach, as sunny and bustling seems far removed from the version shown.

The viewer is encouraged to look closely at places familiar to them and consider how the seasons bring change to the beachfront
